Amazon is looking for a new home for their headquarters in North America. They announced on September 7 they’re looking to invest over $5 billion in construction and operations for the Amazon HQ2 facility, this is said to create 50,000 new jobs.

Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle is huge, it’s 8.1 million square feet, has 33 buildings, 24 restaurants and cafes and employs 40,000 people.

With this recent news various cities in Canada were quick to show interest in this opportunity. Mayors of cities like Toronto, Brampton, Edmonton, and Montreal were quick in selling their cities.

Mayor Linda Jeffrey from Brampton was very vocal on twitter, expressing how she felt about Brampton being the city to host the new Amazon HQ.

Amazon stated that, “HQ2 could be, but does not have to be” an urban or downtown campus, it could have a similar layout to HQ1, and be “development-prepped” somewhere that has viable real estate options.

But they do favour areas with more than 1 million people, a stable and business-friendly environment, urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent, and communities that think big and creatively.

It still remains to be seen whether Halton would want to make a proposal but cities like Oakville, Burlington and Milton are growing cities and they could be able to support a new facility.

Amazon founder and CEO mentions, “Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. We’re excited to find a second home.”
